It is rare for anyone today to live in the midst of a true artistic master.  You in Shanghai have that unique privilege.  Professor Chai, whose artistry we celebrate today, is a masterful painter of absolutely breathtaking art, and he lives right here among us.

　　当今世界，人们很难生活在真正的艺术大师中间，而在上海的诸位却享有这个殊荣。柴教授是令人叹为观止的绘画艺术大师，我们今天在此庆祝其艺术成就。此刻，他就生活在我们中间。

　　A small number of his impressive paintings are being showcased in this exhibit.  This is an exceptional opportunity to experience the wonders of his mental imagery paintings.  This is the technique of expressing on rice paper and foil what Professor Chai sees in his “mind’s eye.”  He lets his art represent the essence of things rather than merely their superficial exterior.

　　本届展览会，只展出其非凡画作的一小部分。这是我们体验奇妙的心象绘画的绝佳机会，柴教授在宣纸和霓金纸上泼墨挥洒，这是他表现“心灵的眼睛”所见所闻的技艺。他的艺术揭示了事物的本质而不是表象。

　　In viewing the images of Professor Chai, we are able to experience emotion, and Professor Chai says that art that does not evoke feelings is not good art at all.  I couldn’t agree more.

　　在欣赏柴教授的意象时，我们能够体验情感。柴教授说，无法激发感情的艺术，不是优秀的艺术。我完全赞同这种看法。

　　I began by saying how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to view these images—a privilege not shared by the rest of the world.  But that is changing.  Today we open an exhibit that is part of an international tour.  Professor Chai’s master works will be shared with the world so that others can appreciate and revere the paintings of China’s great contemporary artist.

　　我前面说过，你们真幸运，有机会欣赏这些画作——世界其它地区尚无此殊荣。但是，一切正在改变。今天，我们开启的画展，是全球巡展览的一部分。柴教授的大师之作从此将于世界共享，以便其他人能够欣赏、领略中国伟大的当代艺术家的绘画。
